I created a lot of new artwork by challenging myself with materials and sizes. I switched my process up a little and it took me into some exciting new directions. This year I want to continue to challege myself to improve.

Lately I've been inspired by the painting a day movement all over the internet. Especially by Cbai Bayoc doing his "365 Days with Dad". That is a phenominal undertaking and he is really producing some great pieces. Being the realist that I am, I know there is no way I could make a beautiful, completed painting every single day like he does. For a lot of reasons, it just wouldn't be a reasonable goal. So I have challeged myself to completing a finished piece every week. This will be a drawing or painting or some mixture of both. The only restriction is that it must be done in one week. Start to finish.

This is going to be an exciting challenge. Sometimes I look back through my sketchbooks and I'm always amazed at all the different thing that I've drawn and been inspired by. This will be the same thing. A weekly chronicle of all the things I come up with. I may end up with a series of paintings or I may end up with a bunch of random pieces. Who knows. That is the fun part of doing this challenge and being an artist in general. Creating with no limits.

Stay tuned to JBarberStudio. Follow me on this new creative journey.

This year I'm doing a linocut of a centaur hunting on the african savannah in honor of my fraternity, Iota Phi Theta Incorporated. In my last post I transferred the drawing to the linoleum and started the cutting. The initial cutting of the centaur linocut is all finished. I inked it up and printed off a proof. The proof is a preview of how the printed image will look. It is printed on cheap newsprint paper while the final run will be printed on an archival quality paper. It looks like to the original sketch and is very close to what I wanted to do. I can already see a few adjustments that need to be made before I get to the final image, a few more cuts to bring it all together. It will be a nice piece to have in your house to represent our great fraternity.

This year I'm doing a linocut of a centaur in honor of my fraternity, Iota Phi Theta Incorporated. In my last post I showed the final sketch. Now that I have the final sketch completed I transfer the drawing to the linoleum. The image is reversed so that in the printing process the final print will be in the proper direction. I've changed the composition slightly by making the sky a different pattern. The new sky pattern will give a better contrast to the figure. At this point I'm thinking of the mark making. Using the different shaped cutting tools I'm removing the areas that I do not want to print. This is also how I can add form and flow to the piece. The cutting is the most fun part of the process. This is where everything will begin to take shape. There will probably be more changes as the cutting happens. As I go along I'm reacting to each cut just as much as I'm holding true to the final sketch. It will all add up to a great final piece.

A design is cut into the linoleum surface with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing can be done by hand or with a press.

Its refreshing every once in a while to do new things. I like to do linocuts a few times a year almost as a vacation from my usual creative process. Carving and printing gives you a different kind of image, with its own rhythm. Each cut has an impact that contribute to the whole feel of the image. My prints are one color which also make design very important.

In the last few years I've done linocuts to commemorate weddings. This year I'm doing an image in honor of my fraternity, Iota Phi Theta. A centaur hunting in the African savannah. I've finished the final sketch and will be begin carving very soon.

I'll only be printing an edition of 25. They will all be hand printed and numbered. The prints will be sold for $50 each. Anyone interested in reserving a print should contact me. I'll keep posting as I continue the creation of the centaur.
